Povidone-Iodine is a complex of iodine with a water-soluble polymer (polyvinylpyrrolidone). Upon application, it gradually releases free iodine, which penetrates microbial cell walls and disrupts proteins, nucleotides, and enzymes. This leads to rapid microbial death without causing tissue damage.

🔬 Mechanism of Action

• Iodine Release: Free iodine is released slowly, ensuring sustained antimicrobial activity
• Protein Denaturation: Iodine binds to amino acids and nucleotides, disrupting microbial metabolism
• Broad-Spectrum Kill: Effective against bacteria (Gram +ve and -ve), fungi, viruses, protozoa, and spores

🧫 Antimicrobial Spectrum

• Bactericidal: Kills Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, E. coli, Pseudomonas
• Fungicidal: Active against Candida, Aspergillus
• Virucidal: Effective against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses
• Sporicidal: Limited sporicidal activity; not a substitute for sterilization
