How to use a bedpan:-

1. Preparation: Gather the bedpan, disposable gloves, and any necessary protective pads. Explain the procedure to the patient and ensure their privacy.
2. Position the patient:
   • If the patient can lift hips: Have them bend their knees and push with their feet to lift their hips. Slide the bedpan underneath them, with the wider end positioned toward their head.
   • If the patient needs help: Assist the person in rolling onto their side. Place the bedpan firmly against their buttocks, and then gently help them roll back onto the bedpan.
3. Ensure comfort: Elevate the head of the bed to a semi-sitting position to make toileting more natural. Provide the patient with toilet paper and a call light.
4. Remove the bedpan: After the patient is finished, lower the head of the bed. Have the patient roll or lift off the bedpan as you remove it. Cover the bedpan to minimize odor and for discreet transport.
5. Clean and disinfect: Empty the contents into a toilet and clean the bedpan thoroughly with hot, soapy water and a brush. For full disinfection, follow sterilization guidelines or use a hospital-grade disinfectant.
